This session will provide educators with the current best practices in phonemic awareness and orthographic mapping. Educators will learn what these skills are, the importance of these components of reading and instruction, and practical strategies to improving students' reading abilities. 

Laura McGowan is a Learning Disability Teacher-Consultant for Freehold Township Schools. She also works for the Princeton Center for Educational Assessments in her free time. Laura earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Rutgers College and has a Master's of Science in Special Education from Rutgers University. Laura is trained in all strands of Project Read and is District trainer for Project Read Phonology and Framing Your Thoughts. She is trained in Just Words, Fundations, Visualizing, and Verbalizing. 

Laura works with students with learning disabilities in district and privately. Laura's passion is to train and support teachers in structured literacy and to help all children learn to read.
