Synopsis

The "North American Indians series vividly depicts the rich history, traditions, struggles, and daily life of North America's Indians. Some volumes focus on a single tribe while others cover a group of tribes linked by a geographic location. The Cherokee culture grew out of the steep inclines and misty ravines of the southern Appalachians. While maintaining their traditions, they outwardly adopted some customs of their white neighbors. That adaptability helped them thrive--until the government confiscated their land and forced them west along the Trail of Tears. Today they are among the most populous Native American tribes, but survival came at a cost.
