Blight : an event - based science module

Synopsis

Encourage students to put their scientific knowledge to the test as they work in teams to solve real-world problems related to an actual event. The project begins with the media coverage seen on the video and then a call to action, which challenges students to tackle an activity based on a real-world happening. The teacher's guide includes student activity pages, the video, and helpful teaching suggestions to really get students into active learning. The classroom set includes Teacher's Guide, Video and 15 Student Editions.

The Irish Potato Famine in 1845 hit hard devastating crops and the quality of life in Ireland. After gathering knowledge about the potato blight-from photosynthesis, plant structure, pollination to seed dispersal and the carbon cycle-students will be able to incorporate what they've learned into a television show to educate elementary school students about the seriousness of plant diseases. This task will provide a great opportunity to integrate technology and science.
