Mohandas Gandhi

Spiritual Leaders and Thinkers Series

by Anne M. Todd

Synopsis

Mohandas Gandhi lived in India during a time when England controlled the nation. Passionately devoted to his homeland and his Hindu faith, Gandhi worked tirelessly to bring independence to India. He wanted to see his country gain freedom and become a place where all the people -- regardless of background or religion -- would be treated equally. Gandhi fasted, led boycotts of British goods, met with Indian villagers to encourage simple living and self-reliance, and organized peaceful protests against the British. All of his actions had a common purpose: to correct injustice against Indians and to bring independence to his country. Gandhi taught his followers to live with an emphasis on truth and love. He shed light on situations in which people were treated unequally and demonstrated a way to remedy injustice -- through peaceful resistance to authority. His life and work as a spiritual leader set an example that continues to inspire people even today. Book jacket.
