The Voices Behind Literacy: Celebrating National Volunteer Week

How a community of volunteers powers possibility for every reader

April is Global Volunteer Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the individuals who give their time and talent to strengthen communities across the country. Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week has been an opportunity to highlight the power of volunteers to tackle society’s greatest challenges, to build stronger communities, and be a force that transforms the world. At Learning Ally, that truth is especially clear: literacy transformation doesn’t happen alone—it happens within a community.

A Community That Makes Literacy Possible

Meaningful change takes more than programs. It takes people. At the heart of Learning Ally’s work is a powerful network of volunteers, donors, and partners who work to ensure that students have access to literacy. Together, this community helps deliver accessible reading solutions to students who learn differently—opening doors to confidence, achievement, and lifelong learning.

Behind every success story is a collective effort:

  • A student discovering a love of reading
  • An educator gaining new tools to support diverse learners
  • A school shifting toward more inclusive literacy practices

These moments are powered by people who show up, contribute, and care.

Volunteers in Action: Voices of Possibility

In 2025 alone, nearly 1,000 volunteers contributed more than 19,000 service hours to support Learning Ally’s mission. These crucial literacy partners:

  • Narrate and produce human-read audiobooks
  • Quality-check content for accuracy and accessibility
  • Support educators and outreach efforts

Each contribution plays a direct role in helping students access the curriculum and build critical reading skills. As one longtime narrator, Maryfran A., reflecting on eight years of service, shared: “It’s rewarding to be a part of this community and to know I am making a difference.”

Voices Can Change Lives

Learning Ally’s human-read audiobook solution is only possible because of its volunteers. These narrators do more than read; they bring stories, textbooks, and ideas to life for students who might otherwise struggle to access them. Their work ensures that learners can engage with grade-level content, build vocabulary, and stay connected to their education. This is what it means to be the heart of the literacy community: a network of individuals working together to ensure that every student can succeed.

The Power of Corporate Volunteerism

Volunteer impact extends beyond individuals. Through Learning Ally’s corporate volunteer program, organizations are activating their employees in meaningful ways. Companies like Microsoft, KPMG, and West Monroe have helped mobilize thousands of employees to support audiobook production and literacy initiatives. These partnerships bridge business and education, demonstrating how corporate engagement can drive real social impact.

A Moment to Recognize—and to Act

National Volunteer Week is about gratitude, but it’s also about momentum. The need for accessible literacy solutions continues to grow, and so does the opportunity to make a difference. Whether you’re:

  • An individual looking to give your time
  • An educator seeking to support your students
  • A company exploring purpose-driven engagement

There is a role for you in this work.
