FAQ

Questions parents ask

How current does the proof of eligibility need to be for me or my child to qualify?

The Learning Ally Audiobook Solution is a proven accommodation reserved for people with reading-based learning differences like dyslexia. Eligibility for the Learning Ally Audiobook Solution can be determined by a professional who has experience identifying whether an individual exhibits a specific skill deficit, disability or condition. Qualified Educators can determine eligibility through assessments, observations and review of student work. Individuals do not need an IEP or 504 in order to qualify. There is no expiration date on qualification once provided by a professional.

Learning Ally is able to offer our human-read audio textbooks and literature titles under a special provision of the U.S. Copyright law (17 U.S.C. § 121, et seq., Marrakesh exemption). To be eligible to receive our solution under this special provision, a person’s reading or perceptual deficit or disability needs to be determined by a Qualified Educator or Qualified Evaluator with experience making such determinations.

I added 3 books to the bookshelf and now I can’t add anymore. What am I doing wrong?

When you sign up for a membership with Learning Ally you have immediate access to 3 audiobooks of your choice until proof of eligibility is confirmed. As soon as we confirm proof of eligibility you will have unlimited access to our full library.

In order to update your account for unlimited audiobook access we must confirm proof of eligibility within 30 days of registration. If proof of eligibility is not received within 30 days your account will be placed on hold until you can provide it.

The reason we provide you with the initial 3 audiobooks is because we have a 30 day refund policy, as outlined in our terms of service. So, if you are not satisfied you can call to cancel and receive a full refund prior to submitting your documentation.

If you have already submitted proof of eligibility and are still receiving a “Limit Reached” error message, please contact Customer Care by phone at 800.221.4792 for additional assistance.

Is membership to Learning Ally available to those outside of the United States?

Learning Ally understands how many people with reading deficits, visual impairments or other physical disabilities outside the United States might be interested in membership. However, Learning Ally is not offering membership outside the United States for non-U.S. citizens at this time. With the adoption of the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled Learning Ally is working on making our services available outside the U.S. Please check back periodically to see when we expand to your region.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you. Please contact our Customer Care department with any questions, or for additional information. We can be reached at customercare@LearningAlly.org or by calling 800.221.4792.

How do I determine eligibility for a student to use the Learning Ally Audiobook Solution, and why is this required?

The Learning Ally Audiobook Solution is a proven multi-sensory reading accommodation for individuals who meet one of the following eligibility categories:

1. Reading Deficit
A reading deficit is determined by a student’s need for a reading accommodation due to challenges with decoding, fluency, and/or comprehension that prevent them from accessing content at the same level as their peers. An IEP or 504 Plan is not required for eligibility.

2. Blind or Visually Impaired
Individuals who are blind or have a visual impairment that prevents or significantly limits their ability to read standard printed materials may qualify. This includes individuals whose visual acuity is 20/200 or less in the better eye with correction, or whose visual field is substantially restricted.

3. Physical Disability
Students who have a physical impairment that prevents them from reading standard print—such as an inability to hold a book or turn pages—may qualify. Examples include conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, or Muscular Dystrophy.

Eligibility may be determined by an educator or other qualified professional with experience identifying reading deficits, visual impairments, blindness, or physical disabilities. Determinations may be based on classroom observations, student work samples, and informal or formal assessments.

Conditions such as ADD/ADHD, autism, intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, or other health impairments do not independently qualify a student for Learning Ally services. However, students with these conditions may be eligible if they also have a qualifying reading deficit, visual impairment, blindness, or physical disability.

Individuals with temporary conditions that prevent access to standard print may also be eligible for services for the duration of the condition, as determined by a qualified educator or professional.

Learning Ally requires eligibility determinations to ensure that access to its accessible audiobook collection is provided in accordance with applicable accessibility guidelines, eligibility requirements, and Terms of Service.

What are the National Achievement Awards (NAA)?
