About the award

Mary P. Oenslager

Each year, the Mary P. Oenslager Scholastic Achievement Awards are presented to Learning Ally members who are blind or visually impaired and completing undergraduate or graduate degrees. The awards recognize academic achievement, outstanding leadership, and service to others.

Mary P. Oenslager was a friend of our founder, Anne Macdonald. She began contributing to Learning Ally, formerly RFB&D, in 1953, and in 1959 helped establish the Scholastic Achievement Awards, personally funding the awards. She shaped the program and enjoyed getting to know the winners each year. She was also an active volunteer, served on our Board of Directors, and recruited individual and corporate supporters.

The awards are given to students chosen by a selection committee.

Before you apply

All scholarship recipients must be able and willing to share their personal story publicly and to represent Learning Ally as a spokesperson and advocate at local, virtual, and national events. Learning Ally covers the costs of these events.

  4. A brief description of your extracurricular and community activities and leadership roles. Include time frames and the extent and level of your involvement.
  5. One letter of recommendation from someone who has had a positive influence on your academic performance and success, such as a teacher, tutor, community leader, or school administrator who knows you personally.
