D.E.A.R. stands for Drop Everything and Read.
On April 12, the birthday of beloved Newbery Medal-winning author, Beverly Cleary, educators across the nation are encouraged to let their students drop everything they're doing and read what they want to celebrate "Drop Everything and Read" Day.
The concept of "Drop Everything and Read" is referenced in the second chapter of Beverly Cleary's Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (MM357), and Ramona is the official campaign spokesperson.
Free D.E.A.R. materials are available from HarperCollins Children's Books. You can find additional materials at Reading Rockets.
