A year ago, Nelda Reyes, Dyslexia Interventionist at De Zavala Elementary, San Marcos CISD in Texas, attended an edWebinar presented by Kristy Mathieu titled “45 Ways to Support Struggling Readers,” and became inspired to make changes in her own classroom and school to embrace and promote a culture of learning and literacy for dyslexic students. Nelda soaked in the ideas and strategies that were shared and made swift changes to ensure that she planned with dyslexic students in mind, attending to their academic, social and emotional needs.
Now in her own edWebinar, Nelda shares some of the ideas that helped create an atmosphere of reading and literacy at her school, including:
• Bringing volunteers in to hear repeated readings from students
• Reading with dogs
• Using the 33 and Me! program
Join Nelda to hear more about how she implemented the ideas she learned and the outcomes that she saw with her students. Elementary level general and SPED teachers, reading specialists, speech language pathologists, librarians, guidance counselors, principals, SPED directors, directors of assistive technology, and directors of curriculum are invited to attend this live, interactive event. About the Presenter: Nelda Reyes
Nelda Reyes has been teaching for 22 years. She has taught grades kindergarten through fifth in regular, bilingual, and special education. She is currently a dyslexia/interventionist teacher at De Zavala Elementary, San Marcos CISD, TX. She is a Wilson Level 1 practitioner and is currently working on Level 2 to become a therapist. Her number one initiative is to advocate and create dyslexia awareness for parents, educators and students. She is on the board of directors for IDA, Austin Branch, in Texas.
