How an Entire State is Equipping Educators with Knowledge and Skills to Implement Effective Literacy Instruction

This presentation will provide an overview of the science of teaching reading and describe how Texas is leveraging high-quality, accessible professional development to support the implementation of scientifically based literacy instruction across elementary campuses statewide. 

Participants will:

  • Consider the importance of high-quality professional development and training for educators
  • Define the science of teaching reading
  • Review the components of evidence-based core literacy instruction
  • Develop organizational strategies to improve literacy instruction for all learners, including English learners and learners with dyslexia
  • Understand House Bill 3 requirements related to reading practices

About the Presenter

Cherry Lee has served in both general and special education. She is currently employed with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in the Division of School Programs as the Director of Reading. Recently, she served as the Dyslexia Coordinator in the Division of Special Education at TEA. Cherry provides technical assistance in the areas of the science of teaching reading, professional development for educators, and learning disabilities. She is a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT), Licensed Dyslexia Therapist (LDT), and an educational diagnostician. Cherry is currently pursuing her doctorate in educational leadership.
