edWebinar: "Using Decodable Books to Teach Phonics and Word Recognition"

Wednesday, January 18, 2023 2:00 PM (UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada) to Wednesday, January 18, 2023 3:00 PM (UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada)

Location: Online

Reading with fluency and comprehension is the goal of all reading instruction. To become fluent, students must develop word recognition—the ability to recognize words with accuracy and automaticity. The question is, how do students develop accuracy and automaticity? The answer involves a combination of knowing what to teach, how to teach it, and which tools to use. In this edWebinar, attendees will:
  • Learn that phonics instruction begins at the sub-word level and progresses through the word, phrase, sentence, and text levels
  • Understand and apply the main tenets of explicit, systematic instruction
  • Evaluate instructional routines focused on building word reading accuracy vs. automaticity
  • Develop strategies for fluency instruction using decodable texts
  • Examine small group lessons which demonstrate the use of decodable books for teaching phonics

If you teach beginning reading or support older struggling readers, this session is for you! FREE resources will also be shared.

This edWebinar will be of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.
