Students with Learning Disabilities Honored for Academic Achievements

Categories: In the News, Uncategorized

KUSA 9News DENVER - Overcoming challenges can be especially tough for children with learning disorders, but some students aren't letting disabilities like dyslexia or blindness get in the way of higher education. National nonprofit Learning Ally honored several students on Saturday. All three students who received the National Achievement Award are blind. [And three additional award winners have dyslexia.] History Colorado Center hosted the event, which was a learning opportunity for the community, too. Performances and demonstrations were open to anyone with dyslexia or a visual impairment. The goal of the event was to let people with learning disabilities know they're not alone, according to student ambassador Stephanie Llorente. "Before, when I found out that I had dyslexia, I literally thought there was no hope. Then having Learning Ally by my side, everything changed around for me," Llorente said. This was the Learning Ally's 56th annual award ceremony. This story originally aired on KUSA 9News in Denver, CO. Watch the full video below or on their website here
