Teen who has Dyslexia Delivers Powerful Speech to the Rhode Island State House

Categories: Disability Type, Learning Disabilities, Public Policy/Advocacy

As adults, it's often difficult to find the courage to speak in front of large audiences. However, 15 year old Drew Frank has been speaking up his entire life in order to self-advocate for his learning difference. Drew has dyslexia -- so he's had plenty of practice for his March 24, 2015 debut in front of the Rhode Island State House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare. We think he hit a home run there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o61s-o6n9iY&feature=youtu.be This committee is currently considering 3 bills:
  • Bill 5011 would require teachers to have two hours of dyslexia-related professional development each year.
  • Bill 5012 would obligate schools to institute mandatory screening for dyslexia in grades K-2 for students showing signs.
  • Bill 5582 establishes a definition of dyslexia taken from the Bipartisan Dyslexia Caucus’ HR456.
Drew says, "I didn't choose to be born this way. It's who I am, and it's a difference that will always be with me."  From everyone at Learning Ally, we're proud of you, Drew! If you live in Rhode Island and would like to contact your lawmakers about any of these bills, you may do so here.
